Sargent Patrick Gass was a favorite of many of the Expedition members. This showed when other members of the Expedition gave Gass small gifts at Christmas at Fort Clatsop. A few months into the Expedition up the Missouri River Sgt Floyd became deathly ill and died of a burst appendix. A few days later the Captains decided to allow the remaining (military) troops to elect a new Sargent. Gass was elected as the new Sargent to replace Sgt Floyd near today's Elk Point, South Dakota.
