This broad ax blade is believed to be the property of Sgt Patrick Gass. The Gass family donated this artifact to the Camp Disappointment Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center Museum in Washington state. Several of the troops probably took personal tools (knifes, guns, tomahawks, etc) with them on the Expedition. Sgt Gass was known to be the best carpenter on the Expedition. When forts or boats were needed, Sgt Gass was always called upon.
